A colorized composite images of a pair of T-38 fighter aircraft flying in formation at supersonic speeds as they break the sound barrier in the first ever images captured showing this aerodynamic effect March 3, 2019 over Edwards Air Force Base, California. When aircraft fly faster than the speed of sound, shockwaves travel away from the airplane, and are heard on the ground as a sonic boom. NASA are studying shockwaves to make sonic booms quieter, allowing supersonic flight over land.
