Wasp sting. Swollen forearm of a 64-year-old woman 2 days after she was stung by a wasp. The venom in wasp stings causes swelling, pain, itching and redness for up to 48 hours. The woman's immune system has become hypersensitised following previous exposure. The venom is recognised as a foreign substance and triggers a vigorous inflammatory response. Treatment is with antihistamine and anti-inflammatory drugs.
