African honey bee research. Entomologist observing bees from a hive of African honey bees (Apis mellifera scutellata). Like European honey bees, these bees feed on the nectar and pollen produced by flowering plants, turning them into liquefied sugar (honey). A hybrid and aggressive form of bees, Africanised honey bees (AHB) or African killer bees were created in Brazil by breeding African and European honey bees together. However they escaped into the wild in 1956 and have now spread up Central America to the USA.
