In the French and Indian Wars, General Edward Braddock led the British forces. He set out to capture Fort Duquesne from the French but, on July 9, 1755, eight miles from the fort, his troops were attacked and defeated. More than half his men were killed, and he was fatally wounded (seen here in this 1890 illustration).
