The Irish anti-tithe agitation: The affray at Carrickshock, also known as the Carrickshock Massacre or Battle of Carrickshock. This ocurred on 14 December 1831 during the "Tithe Wars" when Catholic tenant farmers confronted the Irish Constabulary. The police contingent formed an escort to Edmund Butler who had been tasked with serving enforcement notices on the Catholic farmers who had been witholding the tithe payments to the local protestant priest.
