According to the Bible and the Book of Genesis, in the generations following the Great Flood, people decided to build a tower that reached to the heavens. They did so, so the account says, in the ancient land of Mesopotamia (the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers). The account says that Yahweh came and scattered the people throughout the world and "confound their speech" so that they spoke different languages and could not understand one another. As a result, the built, known as the Tower of Babel, was left unfinished. The illustration by Gustave Dore depicts the "confusion of tongues" and dates to 1865.
