Heart of Sweet Woodruff flowers (Galium odoratum) on tree stump in decidious woodland. A spreading herbaceous plant, it grows to 30–50 cm (12–20 in) long, often lying flat on the ground or supported by other plants. Thrives in deep shade so grows well in woodland. The whole plant is strongly scented, the sweet scent being derived from coumarin. This scent increases on wilting and does not fade on drying. The dried plant is used in potpourri and as a moth deterrent. It is growing wild around the stump along with Ivy, Herb Robert, and grasses.
