This illustration of Hartmann von Aue is from the medieval songbook titled Codex Manesse. Hartmann von Aue (c. 1160-1170 to c. 1210-1220) was a German knight and poet. He, along with Wolfram von Eschenbach, was one of the preeminent great epic poets of Middle High German literature. He was also a lyric poet, much like a French troubador, and wrote a variety of songs, 18 of which survive.
