Ceremonial 'shipcloth' textile, C19th, Lampung, Sumatra. Tampan were used for rites of passage ceremonies, as the focal point for ritual meals, the seat for elders overseeing traditional law, and tied to newly-built houses. Examples from the mountainous interior show stylised natural or domestic subjects and geometric designs, while those from the coast (tampan pasisir) display richly detailed scenes of ships and other motifs. The ship, the main motif, symbolises movement, appropriate to the rites of passage rituals.
