The hand of glory was a lighted candle set in the palm of the hand severed from the body of a hanged murderer. It was supposed to confer invisibility on the holder. The hand was supposed to be cut from the body of a hanged murderer. It was used as a candle-holder by thieves and 'night-workers', for the one that carried it [lighted] was said to be invisible.
