Effect of Woodlands on Evaporation.— A piece of woodland which lies to the southwest and west of a held exerts a considerable effect upon the humidity of the air which traverses that field, the tendency being to make the air more moist. Taking a specific illustration, the air on the leeward side of a second growth black-oak grove was found, on one occasion, to contain per cent, more moisture than did that on the windward side at the same time; and again, when the wind was in the opposite direction, observations in the same locahties showed per cent, more moisture on the leeward side, the observations in the four cases being taken about 10 rods from the margin of the grove.
