Capoeristas show their Capoeria skills on a Paris street.

Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art that combines the elements of dance, acrobatics and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game. The origins of Capoeira is not entirely clear but it is generally accepted that it was developed by runaway slaves. Capoeristas perform in the streets stopping in front of the sidewalk cafés to the delight of patrons. Of course, the offer of a few Euros for the exhibition by the onlookers is always gratefully accepted. Not a lot of people are aware of Capoeira but it’s been rapidly spreading across the globe and is considered an important aspect of Brazilian culture. Many students learn to speak Portuguese so that they can better understand the nuances of the ‘game’.
