Photographer holding a Smooth Snake (Coronella austriaca) for survey purposes to help moniter changes in population. The black heart shaped marks on the back of the head are unique to every smooth snake (like a fingerprint) so we can track particular individuals year after year. The Smooth Snake is a UK BAP priority species which has benefited in England from the conservation management of heathland.
