15th-century Audley's Castle, adapted as an eyecatcher at Castleward, Strangford, County Down, Northern Ireland
Audley's Castle, a ruined 15th-century tower house stands in a part of County Down given to a knight named John de Courcy in 1177. Built by a Hiberno-Norman family on a small hill overlooking Strangford Lough, it's now an eye catcher closing the vista along Temple Water in the gardens of Castle Ward image numbers ..... However, local legend suggest the views from the mansion came at an unknown price for the inhabitants of the hilltop village of Audleystown located in the shadow of the stately home- and now completely disappeared. When, Viscount Bangor died, Lady Bangor also known as ‘The Evictor’ took control of the estate and she and her newly acquired husband set about evicting the village tenants. The rationale behind the victions remain unknown, but must have been important to Lady Bangor because in 1852. all 197 inhabitants were placed on a ship supposedly heading to America, of which there is no record of them ever arriving. The mystery remains, as do the aristocratic motives, perhaps the village was just ruining the views from the manor.
