European bee-eater(Merops apiaster)Hungry


Bee-eaters predominantly eat insects, especially bees wasps and hornets which are caught in the air. Before eating its meal, they remove the sting by repeatedly hitting the insect on a hard surface. It can consume 250 bees daily. Lizards and frogs are also taken. They nest communally in sandy banks preferably near river shores. Dist. Southern Europe, North Africa, Western Asia, tropical Africa, India and Sri Lanka.
