Francis Sheehy-Skeffington Murdered by British Army Easter Uprising 1916

Photograph from The Great War volume 7 published 1918. Francis Skeffington was an Irish suffragist, pacifist, writer & friend of James Joyce, He married Hanna Sheehy & adopted her surname as part of his name, hence his being known as Francis Sheehy-Skeffington, or Skeffy. Despite being an opponent of the armed uprising (believing instead in civil disobedience) and actually saving the life of a British soldier under fire he & 2 journalists were later cowardly shot by an ad hoc firing squad in cold blood. The affair was covered up in Westminster & the officer in charge spent 18 months in an asylum before retiring to Canada on a full pension.
