Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) was a Swedish botanist, zoologist, and physician who formalised binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms. He is known as the "father of modern taxonomy". Many of his writings were in Latin, and his name is rendered in Latin as Carolus Linnæus. He is portrayed in the traditional dress of the Sami people of Lapland, his birthplace in southern Sweden, holding Linnaea borealis that became his personal emblem. Painting by Hendrik Hollander (1823-1884)
