Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a British man of letters. After working as a teacher and tutor, he became the interpreter of German Romanticism in his Life of Schiller and translation of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister. He was a sharp critic of British society, and he believed that people could be saved from their woes by great men. He was very influential in his time, as was his wife Jane Baille Welsh Carlyle, who gained fame as a letter writer. This image is from a photo taken of Carlyle.
