'Frontispiece of John Dee's "General and Rare Memorials"', 1527, by John Dee (1527- c1608). John Dee was a Welsh mathematician, astrologer, occultist, navigator, imperialist and consultant to Queen Elizabeth I. In this work he advocates the rise of imperial expansion. In this highly symbolic frontispiece, Dee includes a figure of Britannia kneeling by the shore beseeching Elizabeth I, to protect her empire by strengthening her navy.
