An Uzbek man sifts through mountains of cotton in Tursunzoda, western Tajikistan.

An Uzbek man piles collects the day's haul of cotton from the area in Tursunzoda, western Tajikistan. The collection area is at the 'Hlop-zavod,' a former collective, as echoed by the Lenin cutout in the background. Much of Central Asia was engineered towards cotton monoculture, with extensive irrigation creating grave environmental consequences such as the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
