This relief decorated the tomb of Scaurus in the Street of the Tombs outside the Herculaneum Gate at Pompeii, an Italian town buried in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79. The figures depicted here are, from left to right: two horsemen fully armed and fighting with lances. The text above says "Bebryx, slave of Julius, of 15 combats, conquered; Nobilior, slave of Julius, of 14 combats [?]. Behind are a Samnite or Murmillo and a Thracian, with a pair of greaves. The Samnite is appealing to the people. The inscriptions, badly damaged, show that both are slaves of Julius. The next pair are a Thracian and Samnite or Murmillo. The Samnite has lost, and is raising his hands in appeal as he sinks on one knee. The Thracian is inscribed "Slave of Julius, of 30 fights, conquered. The Samnite text reads"...of 15 fights discharged, death."
