Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) particle (large sphere). Antibodies that attach to viral envelope proteins and have gold particles (red spheres) attached to them have been used to immunolabel the virus. Formerly known as novel coronavirus, MERS was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. Most people infected with MERS develop severe acute respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Infection is through contact with infected dromedary camels, or infected people. As of July 2017 27 countries have reported cases of MERS, although 80% of cases are reported in Saudi Arabia.
