Pickers sort through garbage finding recyclables as a means of survival at Metropolitan Landfill of Jardim Gramacho ( Aterro Metropolitano de Jardim Gramacho ) in Duque de Caxias city, one of the largest landfills in the world, closed in June 2012 after 34 years of operation when it received most of the garbage produced in Rio de Janeiro city - it was started on an ecologically-sensitive wetland in the 1970s adjacent to Guanabara Bay.
