Knopper gall, wasp and pupa. Cross-section through a knopper gall revealing an unhatched pupa of the wasp Andricus quercuscalis inside. On the left, outside the gall, is a newly hatched adult wasp. Knopper galls occur on acorns of the English oak, Quercus robur, however the wasps that hatch from these go on to lay eggs on the turkey oak, Quercus cerris, causing galls to occur on their catkins.
