China: Hooge (16 April 1609 – 4 May 1648), prince of the Qing Dynasty. Hanging scroll painting, 17th century. Hooge, formally known as Prince Su, was a Manchu prince and the eldest son of Emperor Huang Taiji. He joined military campaigns against the Mongols, Korea and Ming. After Huang Taiji's death in 1643, Hooge and Dorgon disputed the succession to the throne. Their power struggle ended with a compromise in order to avoid internal strife. Dorgon nominated Fulin, Huang Taiji's ninth son born to Concubine Zhuang, who would become Emperor Shunzhi.
