Gustavo Torner, artist Spanish ( Cuenca , July 13 of 1925 ). Along with Gerardo Rueda and Fernando Zobel forms the so-called "Cuenca school," which was one of the first initiatives to introduce in Spain the new currents of modern art in the 1960s, with the founding of the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art Cuenca its main initiative. Self-taught, Gustavo Torner studied Forestry Engineering, and in 1946 began to pursue this profession in Teruel . Good conditions as a draftsman enabled him to receive a custom botanical plates that appear in the work of Spain Flora Forest. These illustrations of remarkable quality, certainly influenced what became his later work. In 1950 he traveled to France and Italy, which was also an important influence. In 1951 he moved to Cuenca, which continues to exert engineering. Currently maintains a friendship with Antonio Saura , and start painting. His early works taken from nature themes, and then find that interest in the natural world is a constant throughout his work. In 1956 he held his first abstract work, "Rock". From here begins an artistic stage in the informalista current, in which the concepts are expressed through the materials used, and especially textures, with no figurative references. Although the oil was the only material used at first, he soon added to these pigments materials such as sand, or plant fragments. These artistic approaches achieved much greater complexity in the mid-60s, in order to achieve greater expressiveness, so wood or metal replaced the conventional canvas and shows and all kinds of objects and materials: nylon, synthetic leather , cardboard, plastic ... Make great facilities theatrical sense, its meaning must be mentioned by the "Tribute" series, dedicated to artists of the past, carried out on 1965 . Thus we find contradictory plagued works and misleading images belonging to an imaginary universe of conflicting realities and false appearances.
