Sir John Herschel (1792-1871) was an English polymath, astronomer, mathematician, chemist, inventor, and key figure in the development of photography. He invented cyanotype photography and various processes that that aided other early photography pioneers, including Daguerre. Herschel is also credited with coining the term photography in 1839.
