Factory Butte, San Rafael Swell, "badlands" area of the the Upper Blue Hills, Utah USA

Factory Butte, San Rafael Swell, badlands area of the the Upper Blue Hills, Utah USA, by Bruce Montagne/Dembinsky Photo Associates. This barren area, is part of the Mancos Shale formation, and is geologically younger than other parts of the Colorado plateau. The bluish color is attributed to the Blue Gate shale. The tops of the mesas and buttes are made of the more resistant Emery sandstone, and overlay the Blue Gate shales. There are occasional seams of coal in this area, some of which are several feet thick.
