Clubmoss cone, light micrograph. Longitudinal section through the cone (strobilus) of the clubmoss Lycopodium clavatum. The strobilus consists of a central axis (purple). At right and left are the spore capsules (sporangia), including an inner wall (red) and spores (orange). The sporangia burst open to release the spores. These then germinate to form gametophyte plants that continue the reproductive cycle. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
