Built in 1883, used as a repeater-station for harbour signals between the observatory and Signal Hill (from where the dailly noon gun is fired). The ball was originally hand operated but its mechanism was later electrified and even later, by radio signals. The time ball is an old fashioned time signal. A large, painted ball that is dropped at a predetermined time, to enable navigators to verify their marine chronometers from their ships. Built in 1894, the time ball in the Victoria & Alfred Wat
