One of the "twin" valleys in Zelve, a great monastic complex, between Goreme and Avanos, Nevsehir, Cappadocia, Turkey. On the right side, you can see a rather peculiar mosque and minaret. Zelve valley is situated somewhere between Goreme and Avanos, right after Cavusin village. It is the second most important Open Air museum of Cappadocia after Goreme National Park. In fact there are two valleys there and not just one. Between the 9th and the 13th century, it was an important Greek-Orthodox monastic complex, with around 16 churches, carved in rocks. When the monks left the place it become a troglodyte settlement, where Christians and Muslims lived together. It was inhabited until 1952, when facing the danger of collapses in the caves, the Turkish government, took the inhabitants and moved them to a village called Aktepe, also know as "Yeni ("New") Zelve.
