The eye-catching Pincushion Protea is native to South Africa and a composite of dozens of flowers represented by thin red stalks with yellow tips.

The eye-catching Pincushion Protea (Leucospermum cordifolium) is one of the many flowering plants in the family Proteaceae. Native to South Africa where it grows wild, the plant also is raised in nurseries for the worldwide cut-flower market. As revealed in the foreground close-up, each colorful blossom is not one flower but a composite of dozens of flowers represented by thin red stalks with yellow tips. They are the "pins" that give the pincushion protea its distinctive name.
