A Salvation Lodging House in 1900 welcomes people of old ages who need food and a place to stay for a while.

This illustration appeared in the London-based Penrose Pictorial Annual of 1900. The publication was a London-based review of the graphic arts that ran from 1895 to 1982. This image shows a kitchen at a Salvation Lodging House welcoming people of old ages who need food and a place to stay for a while. Such places of refuge were run by the Salvation Army, an Evangelical Christian movement founded in the East End of London by William Booth in 1865. It expanded and gathered adherents who devoted much time to helping the poor and helpless.
