Picking Black Diamond Plums, Ballandean, c1900. The Brisbane Courier 28 February 1913 Successful Cold Storage of Fruit. 19874969 ) Mr. Ross (Instructor in Fruit Cultivation) has furnished n report to the' Department of Agriculture regarding a successful experiment of cold storage of stone fruits. On January 10 one case of mangoes, one case of black diamond plums, and one case of Foster peaches aero placed in the cold stores, the fruit being then fairly ripe. After six weeks in tho cold stores tho cases were opened and the fruit in each case was found to be in excellent condition - firm, and of a fine colour. Mr. Ross regards this as tho most successful experiment of the kind that has so far been made, and it is particularly interesting in the case of a tropical fruit like the mango. If they will keep as well for eight weeks, remarked Mr. Ross, then we have solved the question of successfully transporting .tropical fruits from Queensland to London. The fruit was packed In coconut fibre, which the fruit expert suspects must contain some antiseptic quality.
