Volunteers shear the heath and heather in the 3-acre Heather Garden in Fort Tryon Park in New York

Volunteers from the Northeast Heather Society shear the heath and heather in the 3-acre Heather Garden in Fort Tryon Park in New York on Saturday, April 5, 2014 for the 14th Annual Shearing of the Heather. The garden is one of the largest heather gardens the Northeast constructed in 1935 in land donated for the park by John D. Rockefeller Jr. The annual shearing coincides with coming of spring and manicures the plants enabling them to put out more shoots with flowers. There are 40 different varieties of heath and heather planted and the volunteers come as far away as New Hampshire to (© Richard B. Levine)
