2018 Close up of the restored Kwanusila (Thunderbird) that sits atop the totem pole located in Chicago's Lincoln Park near Addison Street.
The original Kwanusila (Thunderbird) totem pole was hand carved from red cedar in 1893 for Chicago's World Columbian Exposition by George Hunt, of Tlingit decent. After the fair it was purchased by James Kraft, founder of Kraft Foods, and donated to the City of Chicago in 1929 when it was placed in Lincoln Park. The pole remained in the park until 1985, when after decades of being out in the elements and occasional vandalism, it was sent to the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia for study and conservation where it remains to this day. In 1986 a new replica of the original totem pole was returned to Lincoln Park. The replacement was also hand carved from red cedar by Tony Hunt, a direct descendant of George Hunt. In 2017 the totem pole underwent a complete structural and cosmetic restoration.
