Horseshoe kidneys. Gross specimen of a congenital abnormality of the kidneys known as horseshoe kidneys. The kidneys are fused at the base (behind the blood vessels at centre) forming a horseshoe shape. This condition may be diagnosed by an ultrasound scan. The kidneys usually function normally but they may be associated with other congenital abnormalities of the kidneys.
