Close-up into a flock of cashmere goats in central Mongolia

Herding was the traditional livelihood strategy in Mongolia. During socialist times, the national herd size, grazing rights and marketing were regulated by the state. Today, herders face multiple challenges. A national herd well above the carrying capacity of the grazing areas is one of the results. Cashmere goats are very popular, since cashmere is in high demand from neighboring China.
