Eastwind Leading Ships to McMurdo Base, Deep Freeze 1963. A PROCESSION OF SHIPS WITH CARGO FOR SCIENCE—Leading the procession to McMurdo Bases, Antarctic, at the outset of Operation Deep Freeze 1963, is the U. S. Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind followed by the icebreaker Edisto and a large Navy cargo ship trailing behind. Seals sleeping close to the broken path lie unperturbed by the thundering, cracking up of the ice as the ships pass by the deliver winter supplies and equipment to the Base.
