The University of Illinois at Chicago (also known as UIC and the University of Illinois Chicago), so named since 1982, has a total enrollment of about 28,000. Prior to 1982 the school was known as the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle. The large campus is just west of downtown Chicago and its famous Loop. It is the largest university in the Chicago area. UIC also operates the largest medical school in the United States.
