These hadhardly gone out of fashion before the Renaissanceinfluence was paramount, and though I have found a few PICTORIAL AND HERALDIC INITIALS small pictorial initials in sixteenth-century French books,notably a very pretty set in a Utrecht Missal, printed byWolfgang Hopyl at Paris in 1505,^ they are certainlyexceptional. In Spain the dignity and severity which marks thework of the early printers were opposed to any savepurely decorative initials, which, probably through theinfluence of the German printers in the Peninsula, cameinto use at an early date, and were often strikingly one pictorial set I have found occurs in the Copila-cion de Leyes, promulgated in 1485, and printed byCentenera at Zamora, probably in the same year.
