Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Brachionus plicatilis is a euryahaline rotifer from the Family Brachionidae that tolerates a wide range of salinity. It is one of the only commercially important rotifers that is raised in the aquaculture industry as food for fish larvae. Rotifers themselves have little nutritional value, however they act as nutrient carriers for transporting high content essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA) and other nutrients from the microalgae to the target species. Although you can feed rotifers a variety of items such as yeasts and algae, the rotifers will only be as nutritious as the feed they have ingested. B. plicatilishas a broad distribution in salt lakes around the world and is a model system in ecology and evolution. Brachionus species can reproduce asexually and sexually (cyclical parthenogenesis). Magnification x160 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
