Leucospermum formosum occurs in the Riversonderend Mountains, the Langeberg and the Outeniqua Mountains where it grows on the cool, southern slopes on moist, peaty soils, 200–1000 m above sea level. Urban sprawl, pine tree plantations and too frequent fires threaten the survival of this protea. Classified as endangered species.
