LUNG, ANATOMY

Anatomic model of the chest organs (larynx, trachea, lung, heart) of an adult human body (anterior view). Lying in the throat, the larynx (in light blue) is composed of several cartilages, but only the thyroid and cricoid cartilages are seen here. It continues with the trachea, whose cartilaginous rings are illustrated in light blue. The right side of the neck shows the thyroid gland (in nude) covering the trachea, and the muscles (in light orange). At the thoracic level, the intern structure of the lungs is depicted. The bronchial tree (in light blue) and the blood vascularization are shown in the left lung. Inside the lung, the bronchial tree consists of the lobar and segmental bronchi, and then the bronchioles and terminal bronchioles. The lung blood circulation is composed of the pulmonary arteries (in black), carrying the deoxygenated blood to the alveoli, and the pulmonary veins (in red), which send back the oxygenated blood to the heart. The right lung, divided in three lobes, is depicted in frontal section, so that the bronchial tree and the blood vessels appear in sections. The heart contains four cavities: two atriums in its upper part (anteriorly covered by the auricles, in beige) and two ventricles in its lower part. The ventricles (in light orange) are wandered by the coronary circulation. The right and left internal jugular veins (in black) begin at the base of the skull, go down on both sides of the throat to reach the clavicles, where they join up with the subclavian veins (coming from the upper limbs) to form the brachiocephalic trunk. The latter flows into the superior vena cava (in black), which brings the deoxygenated blood coming from the upper part of the body, to the right half of the heart. This dark blood goes through the right atrium and ventricle, then is propeled to the lungs via the pulmonary trunk and arteries (in black). The blood oxygenated by the lungs (arterial blood) is next sent back to the left half of the heart (via the
