The Battle of Palestro, after a work by Gustave Dore. The Battle of Palestro, 30-31 May 1859 is thought to be the last European battle in which a European monarch participated. In the illustration Dore has depicted King Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia (later of a united Italy) amongst his troops as they fight the Austrians.
