A Victorian printed image of Pompey's Pillar, Alexandria, Egypt, Set up in honour of the Roman emperor Diocletian between 298–302 AD, the giant Corinthian column originally supported a giant porphyry statue of the emperor dressed in full in armour. In 1803 it was climbed by the commander and sailors of HMS Pandour who allegedly became known as Pompey's Boys. lending their name to the naval term Pompey for Portsmouth naval base.
