Penshaw Monument seen from Fatfield in wintry conditions, England, UK

Penshaw monument was built in 1844 by the Sunderland builder Thomas Pratt to the designs of Thomas and Benjamin Green. It was funded by public subscription and dedicated to John George Lambton. The Leamside line was part of the original East Coast Main Line, but latterly provided a parallel alternative route before being mothballed. There are periodic proposals to re-open this line.
