The old river Thames crossing at Sonning viewed from the east side showing the arches built in red brick and the flowing river.

The red brick built river crossing bridge at Sonning on Thames showing most of the arches with the largest one in the middle for passing boats to go through with wooden piled protection to guard against any boats striking the fragile brick structure on upstream and downstream sides. Viewed looking upstream towards the west (Reading) on a nice sunny day in the morning with the river Thames at its normal height for the time of year. The only navigable arch is the center one with wooden pilings on both sides of the arch as well as on the downstream side also. This location is one of the main routes across the Thames with the next nearest bridge being about three miles away in Reading making this a very busy route, the bridge location utilizes many small islands bounded by channels of the river to allow smaller and newer bridges to be located across these. Also the county boundary divides at the peak of the bridge-see picture F3A1HM for the division post.
