Threave Castle and River Dee


Threave Castle on an island in the River Dee in Dumfries and Galloway, SW Scotland. Dominated by the 14th century keep. Standing in remains of a courtyard and remnants of an enclosing wall. The present castle was started by Archibald the Grim, who was the 3rd Earl of Douglas and Lord Galloway (from 1369-1390). He died in 1400. The castle then passed to his son.
