The turf war gets heated AFRICA HEART-WRENCHING images show a defiant mother lioness’ battle to protect her cubs against attack by an aggressive young male. A band of three two-year-old male lions had been edging towards her territory in the Kij Kij region of Botswana’s Kalahari Desert. Spotting her at a watering hole with her three cubs, one of the three males charged at her and the cubs, attacking and biting with vicious intent. Luckily, she was able to draw the encroaching males away from her cubs and escape unharmed, leaving them to roar in frustration. The chilling images of this attack were captured by a professional wildlife photographer from South Africa, Armand Grobler (31). “Growls of pain and fury echoed across the Kalahari sands in a titanic battle of dominance and survival,” he said. “I saw only a glimpse of a male going for a young cub. “Using her body as a distraction, she took the beating upon herself to save her cubs. “Her bravery was commendable, and when she saw the third male appear and charge down toward her, she decided to lure them away, fleeing across the dunes of Botswana and away from the cubs. “Almost instantly, the sub-adult males started roaring, their thunderous roars filling the vast Kalahari skies in a dramatic display of raw, uncontrollable power.” ENDS
